Greetings from the President
Hyogo Earthquake Memorial 21st Century Research Institute
President Toshitami Kaihara
Aiming for a comprehensive think thank that makes use of the lessons from the Great Earthquake

The Hyogo Earthquake Memorial 21st Century Research Institute was established in April 1st, 2006, by the merger of the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake Memorial Research Institute, a think tank which up until then had served a pioneering role in creative reconstruction and new regional development, and the 21st Century Research Organization for Human Care. The purpose of the Hyogo Earthquake Memorial 21st Century Research Institute is to research the issues of modern civilization shown by the Great Earthquake based on an overall inspection of the 10 year recovery process, and to communicate information for the formation of policies, not only in this region, but domestically and abroad.

Focusing on the basic issues of 1. "Creating safe and secure communities" with the goal of overcoming the vulnerabilities present in modern city systems born of a scientific and technological civilization, while at the same time maintaining and conserving depopulated/environmental regions produced by urbanization, and 2. "Realizing a society of coexistence" with the goal of correcting the defects present in individualism, the fundamental way of thinking for modern civilization, to create a peaceful and abundant society where people help each other, the institute proposes advanced policies from wide points of view on various regional and policy issues, while also developing projects such as communicating the lessons and experiences from the Great Earthquake, conducting intellectual exchange with other research organizations, and cultivating human resources.
