Masakazu Yamazaki

Born in 1934. Graduated from the Department of Literature, Kyoto University, and completed the doctoral course of Art History at the Graduate School of Kyoto University. After studying at Yale University, he served as a visiting professor at Columbia University, a professor at Kansai University, Osaka University and the Graduate School of the University of East Asia, before assuming his present position. Among his other appointments he had been Chairperson of the Subcommittee V "Future of the Japanese," the Prime Minister's Commission on Japan's Goals in the 21st Century, and Art Director of the Performing Arts Foundation, Hyogo Prefecture. His publications include "Individualism and the Japanese" and many others.

Jiro Ushio

Graduated from the Faculty of Law, University of Tokyo, in 1953. Joined Bank of Tokyo Ltd. in the same year. In 1957, Mr. Ushio finished the Political Science course at the Graduate School, University of California. He founded Ushio Inc. and became President of the company in 1964. He served as the president of the Junior Chamber, Inc., in 1969 (from January to December). Since his appointment as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Ushio Inc. in 1979, he has remained in his present position. He has also held many other positions, including DDI CORPORATION (KDDI) (since October 2000), Chairman of Nippon Venture Capital Co., Ltd. (NVCC) (since February 1996), and the Senior Councillor (for life) of Keizai Doyukai (Japan Association of Corporate Executives) (since May 1999).
