Wing Thye Woo(Speaker)

Distinguished Professor Emeritus, University of California Davis / Vice-President for Asia, Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN)

He was born in 1954 in George Town, Malaysia, and a member of the 2nd Georgetown (S) Senior Scout Troop. He graduated from Swarthmore College in 1976 with a B.A. (High Honors) in Economics and a B.S. in Engineering; Yale in 1978 with an M.A. in Economics; and Harvard in 1982 with an M.A. and a Ph.D. in Economics.
He is Vice-President for Asia at the United Nations SDSN in New York City and Head of the SDSN Asia office hosted by Sunway University in Kuala Lumpur. He is also Distinguished Professor Emeritus at University of California Davis, Te Bin Professor in Fudan University in Shanghai, Distinguished Fellow at Penang Institute in George Town, and Research Professor at Sunway University. The Ministry of Education of China appointed him Chang Jiang Professor in 2006; the Governor of Penang conferred on him the title Dato in 2009; the Thousand Talents Program of China appointed him a National Distinguished Expert in 2016; and the University of Cambodia awarded him an Honorary Doctorate in Sustainable Development in 2020.
His current research is on design of efficient, equitable pathways to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals with projects on Green Finance, Middle Income Trap, Decarbonization Pathways in Southeast Asia, and Global Economic Architecture for the Multi-Polar World. He is an expert on the East Asian economies, particularly, China, Indonesia and Malaysia.

Emiko Usui(Speaker)

Professor, Institute of Economic Research, Hitotsubashi University

Emiko Usui received her B.A. in economics from the University of Tokyo in 1997 and her Ph.D. in economics from Northwestern University in 2002. She is an associate member of the Science Council of Japan and a research fellow at the IZA Institute of Labor Economics. Her research interests are in the area of labor economics including family economics, gender issues, compensating differentials, labor search models, employment protection, and intergenerational links in skills. Her published papers include “Wages, Non-Wage Characteristics, and Predominantly Male Jobs” and “Career Development of Female Physicians in Japan.”

Jusen Asuka(Speaker)

Professor, Center for Northeast Asian Studies and Graduate School of Environmental Science, Tohoku University

Ph.D. from the Graduate School of Engineering at the University of Tokyo. INSEAD MBA. He was the director of the Climate Change Group at the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies from 2010 to 2012. He specializes in environmental science policy. His publications include "Q&A on Energy and Global Warming Issues You Need to Know Now (2023 Edition) (Citizens Commission on Nuclear Energy 2023) ", "Green New Deal: Governing Agenda which Moves the World (Iwanami Shinsho 2023) ", etc.

Kumie Inose(Speaker)

Professor, Faculty of Letters, Konan University

Kumie INOSE, with a doctorate degree in History from Kyoto University, specializes in modern British history and seeks to develop an interdisciplinary approach to the British Empire through cultural and gender perspectives. Her publications include Children and the British Empire(1992); British Women and Their Imperial Experiences: Mary Kingsley and Alice Stopford Green(2004); Encounters with the British Empire(2007, 2017); Rethinking Modernity: A Dialogue with the world we have lost(2023). She has edited several books such as British Cultural History(2010). She served as a Vice-President of the Science Council of Japan(SCJ), the representative organization of the Japanese scientist community, in 2014-2017. She has been engaged in a wide range of activities on the SCJ, including the projects on a gender-related issues, national security, research integrity, the recognition of history, and history education bridging between secondary and higher education. She was also a member of the Committee on Freedom and Responsibility in the conduct of Science (CFRS) of ICSU (International Council for Science, now International Science Council) in 2015-2018. She has been a member of the MEXT’s Expert Council Committee for the Promotion of Research Integrity since its founding in 2015, and is also serving a board member of APRIN(Association for the Promotion of Research Integrity) since its establishment in 2015 as well as of Suntory Cultural Foundation.

Jin Tang(Speaker)

Visiting Professor, Shanghai University of Engineering Science / Part-time Instructor, Chuo University

As a senior researcher at a megabank, he has conducted research on China’s industrial economy, focusing on the automobile and electronics industries, and is currently supporting the Chinese operations of Japanese companies. He disseminates information on China’s EV and battery industry through his columns, such as “Jin Tang’s Ringside View on Chinese Automobiles” on Nikkei Business and “Jin Tang’s CATL Watch” on NIKKEI Mobility. His most recent publication is “CASE Revolution in China ? The Future of Mobility in 2035” (Nihon Keizai Shimbun Publishing).
