Naohiro Ogawa is Professor of Population Economics at the Advanced Research Institute for the Sciences and Humanities of Nihon University, Tokyo. He is also appointed as Deputy Director of the Population Research Institute of Nihon University. Over the last 25 years, he has been extensively writing academic papers and books on population and development in Japan and other Asian nations.His numerous papers have been published in internationally respected journals including Population and Development Review, Population Studies, American Economic Review, and Journal of Labor Economics.

Dr. Angelique Chan is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the National University of Singapore.She obtained her Ph.D. from the University of California Los Angeles and completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Michigan, Population Studies Center. Dr. Chan has been researching aging issues since 1990 when she began studying living arrangements of older adults in Malaysia and subsequently Singapore. Recently, she has been focusing on health issues among the aged; specifically, gender and socioeconomic differentials in disability and mental illness among older adults in Singapore and the region. Her published works include academic articles and book chapters that focus on aging in Singapore and comparative analyses of Singapore with other countries in the region. Dr. Chan has conducted surveys of older adults in Singapore and is actively involved in international collaborations to further aging research in Asia.

Robert D. Retherford (Panelist)

Robert Retherford is Coordinator of Population and Health Studies at the East-West Center and Affiliate Graduate Faculty in Sociology at the University of Hawaii. He joined the East-West Center in 1970 after receiving his Ph.D. in Sociology at the University of California at Berkeley. His current research focuses on below-replacement fertility and population aging and a variety of maternal and child health issues in Asia. His work on below-replacement fertility currently focuses on Japan, China, and South Korea. His work on maternal and child health issues focuses mainly on India, where he played a major role in India's first and second National Family Health Surveys in 1992-93 and 1996-98. He has also done previous research on the Philippines, Thailand, Pakistan, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. His work at the University of Hawaii involves teaching graduate courses and supervising students in the University's Population Studies Program.

Shigeyuki Abe is currently Professor, Faculty of Policy Studies, and Director, Center for Contemporary Asian Studies, Doshisha University. He obtained Ph.D. from University of Hawaii. His first job assignment was with UN-ESCAP. He had taught at Kyoto University, Kobe University, and Kyoto Sangyo University prior to the current assignment. His current research focuses on FTA issues in Asia, FDI/trade and development, economic issues of China, and social security issues in Asia. His publications include Japan: Why It Works, Why It Doesn't (1997), The Trade Investment Nexus (2000), and State, Market, Society, and Economic Cooperation in Asia (2004)
