Zhou Dadi (Commemorative Lecturer/Panelist)

Born on August 22, 1946. Zhou Dadi graduated from Qinghua University with his Bachelor and Master degrees on Engineering Physics and Environmental System Engineering, and awarded with Ph.D. by Geneva College of Diplomacy and International Relationship. Zhou stepped down from the position of Director General of Energy Research Institute under NDRC of China in 2006 according to the governmental rule of retirement. His experience focuses on energy policy and energy system analysis. He has devoted for long time in the development of sustainable energy strategy, promoting policy on energy conservation, policy of environmental protection including climate change of China, He has been chief investigators for many important national and international projects and programs. He is the chief advisor on the national energy strategy. Due to his contributive activities in the climate change, Zhou was awarded with the OECD CTI awards of the year 2000 and 2007.

  • Deputy Executive Director, Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ABARE)

Karen Schneider is ABARE’s Deputy Executive Director with responsibility for management of ABARE’s research program. She has specialist knowledge of the energy, minerals and agriculture sectors. In the energy context, Karen has developed and led ABARE’s energy economics program, with a strong focus on international energy issues. In the past several years Karen has, among other areas, directed research on LNG issues in China, Korea, India and the overall Asia Pacific region; on developments in China’s coal market; and on alternative scenarios of Japan’s energy future. She has also led research on international climate change issues, including analysis of alternative international approaches to climate change mitigation and the role of advanced technologies in meeting greenhouse gas emission abatement targets. Before joining ABARE in 1995, Karen was an energy analyst at the International Energy Agency where she was responsible for analysing energy and related economic and environmental issues in developing economies, especially in Asia. Karen has an honours degree in applied science from the University of New South Wales.

Born in Osaka Prefecture in 1945. Obtained his Dr. of Science, Geophysics, Department of Science, Tokyo University and joined IEEJ in 1973. Dispatched as Research Fellow, Energy Laboratory, Massachusetts Institute of Technology by IEEJ. Appointed as General Manager of Research Department in 1991, Director, General Manager in 1994, Managing Director in 2000, Managing Director, Chief Executive Economist in 2001 and Senior Managing Director and CKO, Chief Executive Economist in 2006.

Takeshi Murota (Panelist)

Born in Gunma Prefecture in 1943. Graduated from Department of Physics, Faculty of Science at Kyoto University (obtained Bachelor of Science) in 1967. Completed his master in Graduate School of Economics at Osaka University (obtained Master of Economics) in 1969. Obtained Ph.D. (Doctor of Economics) at Minnesota University in December 1976. Held a post of a professor, Faculty of Economics at Hitotsubashi University and a visiting fellow in Graduate School of Environment at York University in Canada and assumed a Professor of Economics at Doshisha University (present post) in 1996. During this time, held a post of a visiting fellow at International Ecology and Economics Institute of Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences from 2003 to 2004, and a visiting fellow at Economics Geography, Geographical Institute of Russian Academy of Sciences from 2004 to 2005.

Born in1948. In 1972 Graduated from Engineering Department of Kyushu University, majoring in mechanical engineering. That year, joined in Toyota Motor Corporation, in charge of the development of engine and certification for emission 1995, as the Chief engineer of hybrid system development team, in responsible of system planning. In 2000, as the Chairman of emission and fuel consumption sub-committee, Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association Inc., took part in the investigation of the emission control regulations and the fuel economy standards. From 2006, started the present job, in responsible of energy-involved investigation and planning.

Makoto Iokibe (Panelist)

Born in 1943. B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. from the Faculty of Law, Kyoto University. He has taught at Hiroshima University and Kobe University and has been a visiting fellow at Harvard University and London University. He has held his current position since 2006. Prof. Iokibe was appointed chairman of a subcommittee of the “Prime minister’s Commission on Japan’s Goals in the 21st Century” in the Obuchi cabinet. His books include Sengo nihon gaiko-shi (Diplomatic History of Postwar Japan) and Beikoku no nihon senryo seisaku (U.S. Occupation Policy for Japan). He is currently editing Nichibei gaiko shi (History of U.S.-Japan Relations).
